March 30, 2009 - MTW Chile

Dear Team:

SAN MARCOS is just beginning a 40 Day Campaign on Love using Rick Warren’s material from the Saddle Back Church. We have four small groups meeting supported by parallel sermons on Sundays. The material is excellent! Pray we learn to accept God’s love, understand it, and share it in practical ways in our community.

SAN MARCOS is making progress with a candidate for our youth director/pastoral needs. The candidate will graduate from Covenant Seminary this May, apply to MTW, and then, God willing and we are both agreeable, be here next year as our youth director with an eye to him taking over the work as pastor of San Marcos. Lois and I will meet Wes and Hope in April, pray for God’s direction.

On the same line MTW has responded to my request for a gradual transfer of my position as Country Director to a new man by appointing Rick Box of Columbia as the Associate Director to work with me until a replacement can be found. Thank God for this movement, and pray for the right man. Lois and I have no plans to leave Chile, but think someone else should take over the reigns in that I have just turned 69. Can it be?

The good news from the ARICA CHURCH PLANT is that R as of last week has a solid buyer for his house. The paper work is in process and should be complete within 90 days. Pray all will go well and that an apartment will be found for L, his daughter, who has been living in their house in Santiago. The plan is for R to buy a home in Arica to give more permanence to the work there. His son and grandson continue the same, but L, his wife, has been diagnosed with thyroid problems. Pray for healing and guidance for them in these areas, as well as work for R and son F.

Thank you for praying for our conference on finances in OSORNO. It went very well, we have heard encouraging results. At the same time we met with the couples who are starting the mission in PT. MONTT. Pray with me that one of the men will seek ordination and take responsibility for the work, I am encourage that he is strongly moving in that direction. Our next PRESBYTERY meeting may consider revising our ordination policy to bring it into line with the Scriptures, namely I Timothy 3 and Titus 1. Do pray for our wisdom and unity as a presbytery.

MTW has given Lois and I permission for two short HMA trips this year which should complete visiting all of our supporting churches in this and last year. Pray for safety, joy, and fun in the meetings. By God’s grace our support account is in the black.

The Presbyterian Church has not grown over the years as I think we should have in Chile. Ask God to show us where we may have been disobedient, gone astray, or are blind to our mistakes.

MAY YOUR PRAYERS BE TO GOD’S GLORY

- Sam & Lois Mateer
